I was looking for something light and entertaining, something that would definitely make me laugh, and Stevenson did not disappoint! The humor was sharp, witty, and refreshingly clever—definitely a solid four stars right from the start! Then, just when I thought it couldn't get any better, our charismatic narrator, Ernest Cunningham, an author in his own right, reveals all the juicy secrets—not just about the murders, but also about how he crafted this captivating tale. Just like that, it earned five stars!
So, what’s the plot? Well, the title gives it all away: it’s about a family with a killer streak—literally! Our goal, as curious readers, is to figure out how every single member of this clan, even the extended family, became a murderer! You can’t help but wonder if there’s some genetic flair for this chaos. Enter the narrator, Ernest Cunningham, who is also an aspiring crime fiction writer. He takes us along as he uncovers every clue and detail, turning this wild family saga into a true crime memoir that’s as gripping as it is hilarious. And let’s not forget that he kicks off the story with the ten commandments of crime writing—guidelines I absolutely teach in my crime fiction classes! I liked it so much that even if Ernest broke every commandment, I wouldn’t take any stars back!
So why should you pick this book up? If you’re in the mood for a rollercoaster ride of laughter combined with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at writing a story, this book is your ticket! It’s a delightful blend of wit and wisdom that’s sure to keep you entertained. Plus, if you enjoy a dash of murder (or even a lot—I should mention there’s a serial killer in the mix!) with your humor, what could be better? Trust me, you won’t be disappointed—grab it and let the hilarity ensue! And as a bonus, there are two more books featuring Ernest Cunningham! I jumped right into listening to the second one the day after I finished the first one—no joke!
