Everyone in the Group Chat Dies by L. M. Chilton (2025): A Review

Image
Title : Everyone in the Group Chat Dies Author : L. M. Chilton Publication Year: 2025 Rating : ⭐⭐⭐💫 Pages : 343 Source : audiobook @storytel.tr Genre : Humor, Mystery, Crime, Thriller Let’s start with the title: Everyone in the Group Chat Dies. Too subtle! A spoiler in the title! You know what you’re getting, and that’s half the fun. Why did I pick this up? Desperation, plain and simple. I needed a fun audiobook to shake off the existential dread of my daily commute, and this one practically leapt off the digital shelf at me. With a title like that, how could I not give it a shot? If you’re ever in need of a distraction from your own group chat drama, trust me, this will put things in perspective. The plot is as wild as you’d expect: Our narrator, on the run from her family secrets (relatable?), lands a gig as a journalist in a sleepy and boring little town whose only excitement is its famous serial killer. Just when you think she’ll be reporting on lost cats and streets pu...

The Blind Owl by Sadeq Hedayat (1936): A Review

Image
Title : The Blind Owl Author : Sadeq Hedayat Publication Year : 1936 Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pages : 112 Source : book, ebook, audiobook @storytel.tr Genre : Modernist fiction, Surrealism, Psycho fiction, Literary fiction There are rare books that do not merely reflect an individual's mood but encapsulate the profound despair of an entire nation. The Blind Owl is such a work. For many Iranians, it is not just a story, but a mirror of ongoing suffering, struggle, and loss - a narrative of failure that echoes painfully through generations. At its core, The Blind Owl follows an unnamed protagonist, condemned to an endless cycle of nightmare and despair. His suffering is not only personal, but becomes a symbol for the existential pain of an entire nation. The horror depicted in the novel is unrelenting, and each new revelation renders previous torments insignificant by comparison. The narrative refuses to offer comfort, presenting only the bleak reality of anguish that deepens with ever...

Man of My Time by Dalia Sofer (2020): A Review

Image
Title : Man of My Time Author : Dalia Sofer Publication Year : 2020 Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pages : 386 Source : audiobook at @storytel.tr Genre : Historical fiction, Persian Literature, Perpetrator Fiction How cruelly ironic it is to read a novel like this at such a time (i.e., to be living through the darkest chapter in your country’s history, with thousands massacred in two days and countless more dying since) only to pick up a book whose main character is complicit in the very machinery of that violence. The timing of this read feels almost like a deliberate wound, a twist of fate that deepens the sense of national grief and fury. I began Man of My Time knowing nothing about the plot or protagonist, simply following my resolution to read one Persian novel each month. Within the first pages, I was so disturbed by the perspective that I had to research the author, desperate for reassurance that she was not a regime sympathizer. Once certain of her opposition, I braced myself for a read...

I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger (2024): A Review

Image
Title : I Cheerfully Refuse Author : Leif Enger Publication Year : 2024 Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pages : 336 Source : eBook Genre : Science Fiction, Literary Fiction, Dystopian Fiction Disclaimer : This review is more a confession than a critique. I am certain that, under different circumstances, I Cheerfully Refuse could have been a five-star read for me, but I Sadly Refuse to rate it that way now. Circumstances matter! Right now, everything I read is filtered through rage and grief. I Cheerfully Refuse (a title-within-the-title, fittingly meta) is a story rooted in love, grief, and the desperate search for the lost one: an Orpheus-type myth. The love between Lark and Rainy is so genuine and unique, so beautifully created, that for a few fleeting pages, you long for that kind of warmth and hope. It is poetic, and th author uses words to paint the beauty on the page. It’s also a book for book lovers, packed with literary references, a gift for anyone who seeks refuge in stories. I wanted ...
