Let’s start with the title: Everyone in the Group Chat Dies. Too subtle! A spoiler in the title! You know what you’re getting, and that’s half the fun.
Why did I pick this up? Desperation, plain and simple. I needed a fun audiobook to shake off the existential dread of my daily commute, and this one practically leapt off the digital shelf at me. With a title like that, how could I not give it a shot? If you’re ever in need of a distraction from your own group chat drama, trust me, this will put things in perspective.
The plot is as wild as you’d expect: Our narrator, on the run from her family secrets (relatable?), lands a gig as a journalist in a sleepy and boring little town whose only excitement is its famous serial killer. Just when you think she’ll be reporting on lost cats and streets puddles, she stumbles into a murder mystery with roots in a historic serial killer case, and of course the new generation of internet influencers or Sherlock-wanna-bees. Suddenly, the group chat turns deadly—literally. People drop like flies, but the story keeps you guessing who’s next and who, if anyone, is safe.
Now, you might be thinking, “Serial killers? Gore? This doesn’t sound fun at all.” But here’s the genius: the narration is so sharp, witty, and stupid that you’ll find yourself laughing at the absurdity, even as the body count rises. If you love dark humor, meta jokes, and a plot that refuses to take itself seriously, this is your next read. Just maybe don’t start a new group chat for a while… you know, just in case.
